A shield bug on the railing is nearly immobilized by the cold, except for a slow, vaguely apotropaic waving of its antennae when I approach.

    1. Thanks. A better example from later in the day: when I went to deposit some coffee grounds in the container outside my back door, a praying mantis on the side of the house, half-way through eating a caterpillar, waved a forelimb at me.
