Rain again. This is the dreariest, drabbest autumn I’ve ever seen—except for the moss and tree-bark lichens, which have never been brighter.

    Clear and still at sunrise, with a sheen of dew on the meadow. A screech owl trills in the distance, nearly drowned out by goldfinches.

    A white sky with a bright gash of sun. The red-eyed vireo falls silent, leaving only two crickets, one who chirps and one who trills. Then, inevitably, the wren.

    Clear and cool. A migrant wood thrush calls softly at first light. It’s very still. Then the wrens wake up.
  • July 30, 2022
    Cool and crystal-clear. A wood thrush sings as if it’s still nesting season. The western ridge turns red.
  • July 30, 2021
    Breezy and cool. A female hummingbird zooms back and forth between the bergamot patch and the hillside treetops already aglow in the sun.
