I’m reading about the haiku poet who helped lead the Rape of Nanjing. Snow melt begins to drip from the top roof: muffled artillery fire.

Thank you for your reference to Hasagawa Sosei. I’ve found a little information on him. Very shocking. I’m wondering what your reference is? I’m aware of the haiku poets who did not support the war being arrested, tortured and sent to the front lines. Sosei’s response to war in China was (from what little I’ve seen) quite brutal.

Hi Marilyn. I was reading Hiroaki Sato’s chapter about him in his new book On Haiku, which includes translations of his war-time haiku.
