Breezy and cool—a distinctly autumnal feel, belied by the black walnut trees’ young leaves, not yet full size, light green against the darker forest behind them. My brother the birder hurries past, eyes darting all about.

I’m trying to do more “slow birding” lately. I picked up a book by that title, but these young folks that keep wanting to go out with me have better knees and are hard to keep up with.
My main problem with birders is how early they go out! I’m an early riser most of the time myself, but I need the first hour or two to sit on the porch, drink a caffeinated beverage and wake up… as The Morning Porch amply attests.
