Just as I take my seat the sleet starts. Pellets the size of fish eyes lodge in the folds of my coat. The brown ground turns a glassy white.

    Clear and cool. A towhee calls in the distance. Yesterday’s last yellow flower atop the tall mullein stalk has gone out; nothing there now but the sun.

    Another cool morning for a day forecast to be hot. A Carolina wren lands on the railing and cocks his head at me. A screech owl calls in the distance.

    Another cool, humid morning. The hearty laughter of a pileated woodpecker interrupts my scrolling.

    Cool, overcast, and humid. A breeze brings the smell of ozone and a hush of rain finishing its journey down from the trees.

    This year for the first time deer have not eaten all the bracken in my yard. One frond is already yellowing like the skeleton of some unlikely fish.
