In the cold rain, a winter wren forages in the mud beside the creek, chirping excitedly and bobbing up and down on spring-loaded legs.

  1. I have a bunch of “spring-loaded” birds at the feeder this morning. I counted 8 different kinds including 2 Carolina Wrens. Hadn’t seen them before.

    1. I love Carolina wrens! They are often resident here on the mountain, but for the past year they’ve been absent, which might be one reason why the shyer, quieter winter wrens are a little more in evidence, though usually their habitat preferences don’t overlap too much.
