The top of a dying red maple has been blown down across my walk. The wind raises a zombie army of leaves to go staggering over the snow.

    Cool and humid. A phoebe dives for an insect and gives it to a fledgling sitting on a walnut branch. In the shadows of the trees, white masses of mountain laurel blossoms.

    Heavily overcast and humid. A hen turkey’s anxious call. The springhouse catbird slipping out of her stream of consciousness to mew.

    Cool with thin clouds. Two wood thrushes fly into the woods, dead grass trailing from the leader’s beak. A chipmunk runs under my chair.

    Cloudy and cool. I’m still mulling over yesterday’s funeral. From the back of the house, the dull thumps of a towhee attacking its reflection.

    Venus in the dawn sky. Phoebe, field sparrow, wood pewee. The alarm-snorts of a deer.
