Treetops rock and sway as the dawn sky shuffles patches of darkness and patches of light. The inevitable crow.

Fog prolongs the dawn well past sunrise. How long will squirrels keep scolding after a cat has slunk away? Ten minutes and counting.

Still air and a heavy frost. A pair of ravens fly side by side over the porch, one calling like a crow—falsetto—the other like a death rattle.

Overcast but bright, and very quiet apart from the stream’s gurgle. Two squirrels seem to be hanging out, but only one acts amorous—the other remains focused on her walnut.

The ground is white again. Bright spots in the clouds that could be moon or dawn. The deep breathing of the pines.

Heavy gray sky. A screech owl’s descending quaver. And then it’s sunrise, according to my phone and the crows.

Overcast and quiet, with a fresh dusting of snow. A squirrel loses its nerve and backs off from a death-defying leap.

A few flakes of snow. Valley sounds eddy on the wind. The sun makes an appearance among the ridgetop trees.

Fifteen minutes after sunrise, the cloud-lid lifts, and a bright seam appears above the horizon. A white-throated sparrow sings two notes and stops.

The mountain is loud with running water; it sounds like March. Returning from hunting, the feral cat gives me a baleful glance as she slinks under the porch.

Hard rain beginning to ease by late morning. Chirps and twitters become audible. The last patches of snow line the road like litter.

The sound of running water in the darkness. Occasional soft, sparrowy chirps as the sky brightens. Then the wren’s impatience bubbles over.

A clearing sky at sunrise with the sound of running water and a wren. The snow is looking threadbare, even on north-facing slopes.

A mottled white sky with crows to the north and ravens croaking off to the south. The snowpack is soft and granular, absorbing sound.

On This Day

  • November 8, 2025
Mostly clear after last night’s rain. A flat-tire moon hangs low in the west. The wingbeats of a raven are, for a few moments, the loudest sound.
  • November 8, 2024
Clear and cold. The red squirrel makes its usual racket while the gray squirrels leap silently through the treetops. The western ridge turns red.
  • November 8, 2023
The sun clears the ridge and I’m blinded—the oaks are mostly bare now. Those that aren’t, glow red like a scattering of old barns.
  • November 8, 2022
5:20. Bleary-eyed smudge of an eclipsed moon above the western ridge. 6:20. Pink clouds turn orange. The first song sparrow.
  • November 8, 2021
Yet another bright blue October day a month late. The scarlet oak Dad and I planted 25 years ago is in its glory, redder than the sunrise.
