Somewhere in Plummer’s Hollow,
a man sits clipping his nails
this morning. There
is snowfall, light as down.
Much further east, uncommon frost
recedes into the hills of Atok, Benguet,
studding the heads of cabbages,
stalks of wild grass, flowers.
Wasn’t it there
conquistadors sought
the fabled orange tree that flew or fell
from El Dorado? Under the earth
are jars of ore and silver.
Little flotillas of creased paper
go down the creek. Sometimes
it seems the past might never
have happened. But even here
the ends of threads are gathered;
the lines on the horizon draw
this world into the other one.
And back and forth the shuttle goes.

Nice! We share this interest in the conquistadors.

Good morning – forgive me for using your comment section for asking a question. I didn’t know how else to get in touch. You have a photograph of huckleberry leaves which I saw a few days ago. May I use it to illustrate a small stone it inspired?
Okay, three questions. I have been following you and, consequently, Luisa Igloria for a while and that has inspired another possible poem. May I know if you drink coffee while sitting on your morning porch [like any writer I don’t mind making up details, but that one I would like to know]?
And, lastly, I have ordered your book of poems on hand tools [I collect and love old hand tools] and did not spot the fact that if I had ordered from you it would be autographed. If I get myself organised, may I send the book to you with a SASE? Thank you for whichever of these you answer!

Hi Margo,
I do have a Contact page on my main blog, Via Negativa, that gives out my email address (and includes details on ordering autographed copies of Odes to Tools). Thanks for ordering the chapbook, and sure, if you want to mail it to me, I’ll be happy to autograph it for you.
I’m guessing the huckleberry leaves photo you’re referring to is from the photoblog, but I uploaded the same photo to my Flickr account and it would be easiest for you to grab it from there: http://www.flickr.com/photos/89056025@N00/5144159339/
The About and Multimedia pages on this site should answer your questions about coffee drinking (yes!) and more.
