Woodpeckers drumming at sunrise. It occurs to me that they might not be telegraphing “I am here” so much as verifying that the world is.

  1. They drum on my house, reminding me that I was asleep. But, I suppose, verifying (to me) that I am in the world.

    1. Oh dear. Is it unpainted wood? I used to have a pileated that did that now and then, before the latest paint job.

  2. Well, given the time of year, I suspect that woodpecker is not just saying, “I’m here,” but “I’m here and really, really hot!”

We have fought a Ladder-back for several years. He favored the 4X4 posts supporting a walkway. The holes were threatening the integrity of the posts. We tried wrapping them in foil, which works but is quite temporary. I have now installed sheet metal around the posts.

    That’ll learn him, dern him!
